EdTech and Equity: The Role of Technology in Democratising Education in India

Abstract

The rapid proliferation of educational technology (EdTech) in India has transformed the landscape of learning, offering unprecedented opportunities to democratize education across socioeconomic and geographic divides. This paper critically examines the role of EdTech in promoting equity within India’s education system. It explores the evolution of EdTech, its impact on access and quality, and the persistent challenges of digital exclusion. (Sharma et al., 2025).Drawing on government initiatives, private sector innovations, and grassroots interventions, the paper highlights both the successes and limitations of technology-driven reforms. Through case studies and policy analysis, it argues that while EdTech has the potential to level the educational playing field, its equitable implementation requires a nuanced, context-sensitive approach that addresses infrastructural, linguistic, and pedagogical barriers. The paper concludes with recommendations for policymakers, educators, and EdTech providers to ensure that technological advancements translate into meaningful educational equity for all Indian learners.
